Michael Shanks was born on 15 December 1970 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He completed his B.A. in fine Arts from the University of British Columbia in 1994. He is married to actress Lexa Doig, whom he met while working together on ‘Andromeda‘ series. They have two children, a son and a daughter. Shanks has one more daughter named Tatiana, who is eldest of his children, from a model/actress Vaitiare Bandera.
He loves to play ice hockey and at one time, he wanted to turn his hobby into his profession. He has portrayed a school hockey coach in a TV movie ‘Under the Mistletoe’.
After the completion of his studies from the University, he started appearing in stage productions. He also has done a two year apprenticeship at the Stratford Festival in Ontario. He started appearing in guest roles for the television series like ‘Highlander‘, ‘University Hospital’, ‘The Outer Limits’ and in a TV movie ‘A Family Divided’. Later, he earned the breakthrough role of “Daniel Jackson” in the series ‘Stargate SG-1′. He played the role of a gambler in ‘The Call of the Wild: Dog of the Yukon’. He has also made his appearances in ‘Escape from Mars’, ‘The Artist’s Circle’, ‘Door To Door’, ‘Judicial Indiscretion’, ‘MegaSnake’, ‘Stargate: The Ark of Truth’, ‘Living Out Loud’ and ‘Desperate Escape’. He has guest starred in ‘Andromeda’, ‘Stargate Atlantis’, ‘CSI: Miami’, ‘24′, ‘Eureka’ and ‘Burn Notice’.
He is also associated as a director for some episodes of ‘Stargate SG-1′. He has also acted in the German/UK/ South African co-production of a science-fiction film ‘Sumuru‘.
He won the Leo Award in 2004 for the Dramatic Series: Best Lead Performance by a Male for ‘Stargate SG-1′. He earned the nomination for the same award under the same category in 2005.He had also been nominated for the same award in 2000 under the category Best Performance by a Male in a Dramatic Series for “Stargate SG- 1“. He was also nominated as the Best Supporting Actor on Television in the Saturn Award in 2001 and 2005 for his role in ‘Stargate SG-1′ and for the Best Actor in a Television Series for the same in 2004.
